July 23, 2019Over the years we have had numerous questions regarding trekking poles… “Should I bring trekking poles?” Or, “What are your thoughts on trekking poles?” Our answer… Yes!
It took a while to get used to using trekking poles. The thought of trekking poles for most of the younger generations is they are for “old people”. Honestly, they are for EVERYONE. One thing with trekking poles that is extremely beneficial is weight balance and weight transfer when you’re loaded with a heavy pack. We all know throwing a heavy pack on your back can throw off your balance a bit anyways, so why not have a pole to help catch yourself and help keep your balance? Now add in steep terrain, uneven terrain, loose terrain etc, all of these factors are pulling at you with weight on your back and gravity’s law is to pull you down.
The use of trekking poles isn’t just necessary for having a heavy pack. They are good for all around hiking any time of the year. Pack or no pack. You can hike faster and help your knees out too. Additionally, if you’re in the off-season and looking to burn extra calories, grab a set of trekking poles and use them. You can burn up to twice as many calories using them on a normal walk or hike.
Now all that being said, trekking poles are a must. Now which ones to buy? Do you go with a cam lock or a twist lock set? The cam lock poles are generally a bit more reliable and keep from slipping when added weight is put on them. Twist locks can loosen and when you put weight one time the pole might slide inside itself and collapse a bit.
We would recommend looking at Black Diamond or Leki trekking poles. These can range from $75 to $160. There are several models available for lighter weight and more compact fit for storing in your pack. The Black Diamond Trail Ergo for $129 is a great pole. If you’re looking for space saving and / or you women out there, look at the Black Diamond Distance FLZ for $139. These are just a couple quick ones, there are numerous models on the market.
Go get yourself some poles, you won’t regret it!
