January 8, 2020What to expect on your Alberta whitetail hunt and a few tips to go along with it. Sure, it gets a little cold here in Alberta. But it’s all about the big whitetails! Alberta, Canada is home to some of the biggest whitetail deer on the planet. And hunting these bucks in the rut is something that every deer hunter should experience. As long as you’re well prepared for the weather, you’ll forget to notice it!
On our trophy whitetail hunts in November, hunters can expect daytime temperatures to be in the 30s (Fahrenheit) while lows can often dip close to zero. This means layering. A key factor in having a successful and ENJOYABLE hunt is staying warm. We recommend wearing several layers of clothing starting with one or even two layers of merino wool base layers. Followed by a heavier weight fleece or softshell type garment to hold heat and wick moisture. Then for your outer layer a nice heavy weight fleece or insulated bib and parka. Oh, and don’t forget 2 layers of socks as well. Polyester base layer socks followed by a heavy weight wool.
Brands you might look at for cold weather whitetail sits are Sitka, they offer a full line of whitetail gear. First Lite also has great merino wool base layers followed up with mid-weight and heavy-weight outer layers. Additionally, Cabela’s offers ¾” pile thick Berber which is a great late season suit to keep you warm.
Let’s not forget boots… A good pair of Pac Boots to keep your feet warm is key as well. Baffin makes great boots to suit your needs here.
Staying warm is the key to whitetail success in the late season. The longer you can site and be comfortable, the better your odds and being there when that big buck finally appears.
No matter what gear you pack, one of the most important things is to practice shooting in it before your trip. Make sure you’re comfortable shooting while wearing your jacket and all other clothing that you’ll have on the hunt. The moment that a giant Alberta whitetail walks within range is not the time to have any miscues or discover problems with your setup.
Practice, practice and practice some more. Especially if you are a bowhunter.
