2015 B.C. Hunting Update
November 20, 20153 Reasons We Love Hunting in British Columbia
March 20, 2016We receive questions each year from our hunters about our rifle recommendations for a whitetail hunt here in Alberta. As most hunters know, there are an endless number of variables when it comes to your weapon. However, we like to keep things simple: shoot the rifle you’re most comfortable with. In fact, we believe that shot placement is far more important than anything to do with your firearm.
Our whitetail guides have witnessed a lot over the years, and we’ve certainly seen both good and bad when it comes to putting deer on the ground. For example, we like to say around here, “come set up for bear, not for mice.” Meaning, we like to remind people that these Alberta whitetail deer are tough, big game animals.
Beyond using an adequate round, there’s not much we typically recommend to our hunters, other than to shoot a rifle you’re comfortable with and that you know well. Shoot whatever scope and ammo makes you feel most confident. In the end, shot placement is far more important than any other variable.
We also stress that hunters avoid taking unethical shots. Make sure you take your time, wait for a clear shooting lane and a broadside or quartering shot. Out of respect for our deer, hunters shouldn’t be taking marginal shots. When adrenaline begins pumping, this may be more difficult than you think. If you don’t have a clean shot, do the right thing and wait for a better shot or pass.
Besides being patient for the shot, we believe hunters should come tuned for all angles and situations. Many hunters spend time practicing at distances of just 50 or 100 yards. Practice at these distances certainly does have value in your training. But don’t forget to practice other likely situations. If possible, practice out to 200 yards or more. Also, be sure to practice while wearing your hunting clothing. Do everything you can to imitate that moment of truth on a trophy whitetail buck.
The 2016 hunting season will be here before you know it. Get out there and begin your work at the rifle range now! Don’t wait too long and let it become stressful. We’re looking forward to seeing many of you here at North River Outfitting this year.
