How Much Do You Really Know about Mountain Goats?

March 28, 2017Spring is here and the days are getting longer. If you’ve procrastinated on your New Years resolutions to get in shape, it’s time to get it into gear. When it comes to getting into shape, hunting season isn’t far away. Starting your conditioning now will make a big difference.
The best way to get into shape is to do it gradually. Trying to cram in exercises in a short period before the hunt won’t be as effective. Start now and set a realistic routine that you can build on over the next several months. Here are a few tips for getting started.
Cross Train
Don’t rely on one form of exercise. This can get boring and it won’t prepare you adequately for a hunt. It’s best to train in a few different disciplines. Make sure you’re getting both cardio and strength training. Many hunters are even finding success with exercises like yoga that combine stretching, balance and strength training. If you think about the fact that hunting often requires you to hold awkward positions for long periods of time, this makes perfect sense. It can be mental as much as it is physical. In any case, mix up your workouts.
Accountability and competition can be huge weapons toward success. If you’re having trouble getting motivated on your own, find a trainer or join a class at your local gym to help you get started. Having others to help spur you on toward new goals can make a world of difference. Indoor cycling, yoga, weight lifting and a myriad of both cardio and strength-training classes are available at any gym.
Set Goals and Be Consistent
Starting now will make a big difference in your physical strength and abilities next fall. But only if you stay consistent. Make realistic but firm goals with yourself and stick to them. If you do, you might be surprised at what you can accomplish. Best of all, you may be surprised at how you feel on your hunt. When you’re having trouble getting motivated, remind yourself what you’re after. Whether it’s a big bull moose, a beautiful mountain goat or that long-awaited stone sheep, when your boots are on the mountain this fall, you’ll be glad that you prepared.
Being in better shape for your hunt will allow you to capitalize on more opportunities. You will give yourself a much better chance at taking the trophy of a lifetime. But even more importantly, being prepared will help you have more fun. It will help shift some of the focus away from the burning in your legs and lungs, and to the adventure at hand.
