Backcountry Hunting Tent Selection
January 26, 2020Girl Power – Mountain Hunter Magazine
January 27, 2020We get questions from time-to-time about, “what is the best setup for hunting moose or caribou with a bow?” While we primarily have rifle hunters in camp, we do get those who wish to harvest their game with a bow and arrow for added challenge. We love the ambition and while harvest rates aren’t as good as using a rifle, there is some serious satisfaction and achievement by those using archer equipment.
We will break down a few suggestions here for those wishing to use archery equipment…
Bow Setup
- 70lb Draw Weight
- 450gr minimum arrow weight (500-550 is ideal)
- Fixed blade broadheads (2 blade or 3 blade)
- PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
Those are a few of the essentials when bringing a bow to the north country. While different setups can be used and harvest animals across the world, these are just our basic suggestions. A 70lb draw weight is ideal especially when using a heavier arrow to ensure getting enough speed to handle the weight of the arrow without a giant arch. The heavier arrow creates more momentum down range which ensures greater penetration. On a moose this is critical as they are big animals. And we like fixed blade broadheads because of reliability. A solid 2 blade broadhead is tough to beat for penetration and durability.
The biggest key to your success on bringing archery equipment to the north is – practice. We can’t stress it enough. We owe it to the animals to make a clean ethical shot, let alone yourself after you have put in countless hours and miles to get in position for a shot. You want to make a good shot and recover your animal quickly.
If you have any questions about your archery setup please don’t hesitate to contact us ahead of time and discuss it with us. We encourage you to get all of your questions out of the way before you show up, that way when you arrive it’s all about enjoying your trip and the moments ahead of you.
