The Thrill and Adventure of a B.C. Mountain Goat Hunt
January 12, 2017Spots Now Available for 2017 Mountain Goat Hunt
January 27, 2017British Columbia is home to some incredibly remote and wild country that’s perfectly suited to a combo hunt experience. It’s not uncommon for our hunters to have tags for more than three different species in their pocket. While hunting mountain goat it’s not unusual to spot a big mountain caribou. While hunting mountain caribou, you could easily run into a giant moose or even a grizzly. Wolves and wolverines are even a possibility. This area is home to a wide diversity of big game animals and produces B&C class trophies of each species.
Having all of these options is a rare benefit. But there’s a certain amount of confusion in knowing where to start. We receive a fair number of questions about the different combo options and how those line up with our dates and combo hunt schedule. For a quick overview of our combo hunts you can see our 2017 Dates Page. But here’s a more in-depth look at each of our available hunts.
Mountain Goat Hunts
Other than our stone sheep hunts, which begin at the end of July and are a different experience altogether, our first hunts of the year are mountain goat hunts. In 2017 this hunt will run from August 29 through September 9, including charter days. Although many of our mountain goat hunters do carry a caribou license or moose license, the main objective of these early season hunts is mountain goat. If you have a mountain goat high on your list, these are the dates to book.
Combo Hunt 1
Our first true combo hunt of the year begins toward the second week of September. In 2017, the hunt will be from September 9th through the 20th, which includes charter days. This first combo hunt is one that we often recommend to those who are highly interested in grizzly. But this hunt is also very productive for moose and mountain caribou. While the moose are not yet in the peak of the rut, this can be a great time to kill a big bull before he’s with cows. The pre-rut can produce some of our biggest bulls of the year.
Combo Hunt 2
This hunt falls from September 20th through the 30th this year. This is typically the peak of the rut for moose and for mountain caribou. This second hunt is an ideal time to combine both moose and caribou. But like any big game, getting on a mature animal with females is challenging. It’s an exciting time of year to be in the field but many folks steer directly to this hunt and overlook the pre-rut benefits. If you’re on the fence, call and discuss your specific goals. We will help steer you in the right direction.
Combo Hunt 3
Our third combo hunt falls during the first week in October. This year, it will be September 30th through October 11th. This is still in the midst of the rut for mountain caribou and moose. If a mountain caribou is your top priority, this might be the hunt for you. And it’s still a great time to catch big bull moose on the move. The weather can get colder this late in the season and snow is a possibility. But the challenges are certainly worth the rewords as trophy class animals are coming out of the woodwork.
